Endodontics – What It Is and What It Deals With

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of anomalies within the pulp or root of a tooth. The dental pulp (nerve) is located inside the canal within each tooth root. The pulp consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, playing an essential role in the development and maintenance of tooth vitality.

Endodontic treatment is performed when tooth decay has destroyed the tooth deep beneath the enamel and dentin and reached the pulp. The penetration of toxins and bacteria causes pulp infections, leading to increased tooth sensitivity during chewing. If an inflamed tooth is not treated, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone, creating a granuloma at the root tip. The priority of our dentists is to treat and preserve the tooth and its root. However, the therapy requires patience, which is often an essential and necessary part of endodontic treatment.

How is tooth treatment performed?

To better understand how tooth treatment is performed, here are the stages of the procedure:

1. Before starting endodontic treatment, a 3D X-ray of the affected teeth is taken.

2. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to minimize pain and ensure precision.

3. Endodontic therapy begins with the removal of diseased tooth tissue. The inflamed dental pulp is removed, and chemical and mechanical cleaning is performed to eliminate bacteria and infected dentin from the root canal.

4. The root canal is sealed hermetically, and the tooth crown is restored, providing a permanent solution.

Conclusion

The tooth treatment process should not be painful, but it requires patience and multiple visits to the dentist. After root canal therapy, the tooth surface may be damaged, or the tooth may darken. To address this issue, placing a crown or bridge is recommended. This protects the tooth while maintaining its functionality and aesthetics.
